In order to clearly identify and define the functioning of a CNC vertical lathe, it is important to revisit the functioning of the CNC lathe and the vertical lathe. The CNC vertical lathe is in fact the combination of these two types of machine tools: a vertical lathe that integrates a digital control. The CNC lathe is a machine tool designed to perform the turning operations controlled by a digital control. The machining steps and the movements of the lathe are managed by a program worked out manually or automatically. Its design and architecture are more complex than those of a conventional lathe. Besides, they can vary considerably from one model to another, depending on the choice of the manufacturer, the specific needs of the customer, and the configuration of the machine tool. The vertical lathe is used to machine workpieces with a large diameter and high weight, which cannot be processed using a front lathe. This type of turning machine tools allows, moreover; reaching a high output. On the vertical lathe, the workpiece is positioned on a rotating plate on a vertical rotation axis. The diameter of this plate can measure from 0.80 to 20 meters. One or two columns support the carriages which move on slideways and have toolholders turrets. One of the characteristics of a vertical lathe is the number of axes it has. The number of axes can exceed ten on a CNC vertical lathe. The machining capabilities of the vertical mathe depend on several factors: maximum diameter, maximum movement of the carriages along the X and Z axes (X and Z cap), plate diameter, machinable height and maximum weight of the workpiece. The second-hand CNC vertical lathes need to be meticulously checked in order to offer the best possible performance. The models manufactured by Berthiez, Index, or Nodier Nodier EMAG are among the machine tools of this category which go through RDMO workshops for checking. Danobat, EMCO, Mazak, Okuma, DMG Mori, BOST, and Knuth are also reference brands in the field.
